Summary of OCDE Project GLAD® model (to be memorized and internalized):
OCDE Project GLAD® is a professional development model of effective teaching strategies that meet the cognitive, emotional and linguistic needs of ALL students, especially English Learners. Each of its 6 component areas highlight culture connected to instructional strategies and tied to research. At its core OCDE Project GLAD® is driven by the guiding principles that all students have valuable assets; diversity is cultivated and celebrated. Development and mastery of language will lead to academic success.
In my work for the past 12 years as a NTC Consultant, I have had multiple opportunities to build relationships and network with educators and administrators all over the country. I also interface with educators in my role as parent to 3 school-aged daughters. As I navigate the different roles and hats I wear in my community as an educator, parent, mentor and volunteer, I stay open to the needs presented in conversations. I seek to understand by asking questions, discerning limitations in particular contexts as well as carefully listening.
Understanding the mission, vision and guiding principles of our model, I will confidently share what it is I do and how I can help. I do not shy away from explaining my role as an OCDE Project GLAD Field Consultant and will say something like, “I help educators and administrators get unstuck in their practice by re-examining personal core values/beliefs/philosophy of teaching; sharing ideas for establishing a strong classroom culture, building academic success through effective instructional strategies and examining how language is acquired.” The key is KNOWING and BELIEVING that the model works and CONFIDENTLY articulating what makes the model so compelling. I have been living, teaching, coaching with this model of strategies since 2003 and I believe that every single educational institution NEEDS OCDE Project GLAD®.
At this point in the conversation, I may share my contact information or ask to get in touch with the potential client/administrator. During this meeting, I always start out by listening to the decision maker and what it is they are looking for. It may or may not be me. At this point, if appropriate, I share a brief awareness presentation or “pitch deck” with the “why” of the model and services offered. Depending on the needs assessment, I will then customize a training or coaching session that utilizes my expertise aligned to the greatest needs of the educational group.
Moving forward and expanding my reach, I will look at the relationships I have previously built with teachers. Since OCDE Project GLAD® is a model used, developed and spread by teachers, I rely primarily on this method for new contacts. I work best when I grow my reach through building relationships. I value the individual and their experiences, successes and failures. I seek understanding and consensus and then I influence through my strength of WOO to unite teams, build networks and move forward into growth and academic success for ALL.
